In Autumn, preparing for Winter, Nutkin, his brother Twinkleberry, and their many cousins plan on gathering nuts at Owl Island. The story focuses on Nutkin, a Squirrel, and his family of Squirrels. An abbreviated version of the tale appeared as a segment in the 1971 ballet film, The Tales of Beatrix Potter. ![]() One commentator has likened Squirrel Nutkin's impertinent behaviour to that of the rebellious working-class of Potter's own day, and another commentator has noted the tale's similarities to pourquoi tales and folk tales in its explanations of Squirrel Nutkin's short tail and characteristics of squirrel behaviour. The background illustrations were modelled on Derwentwater and St. Squirrel Nutkin had its origins in a story and picture letter Potter sent Norah Moore, the daughter of her former governess, Annie Carter Moore. The now-familiar endpapers of the Peter Rabbit series were introduced in the book. The book followed Potter's hugely successful The Tale of Peter Rabbit, and was an instant hit. The story is about an impertinent red squirrel named Nutkin and his narrow escape from an owl called Old Brown. ![]() The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin is a children's book written and illustrated by Beatrix Potter and first published by Frederick Warne & Co. ![]() That's evidence enough for me of a connection with real life. The book jacket illustration is attributed to Clara Van Waning. The central character, Lyle Van Waning, is just too real (and lovable) to be a complete fabrication. ![]() It took me most of the book to figure out that it's "faction." The Jimmy Galvin of the novel is the author, and the other characters are clearly fictionalized versions of people he knew well. It's essentially plotless, and non-linear in the extreme. The book is beautifully and heartfully written, but be forewarned. The life requires great hardiness and ingenuity to withstand the isolation and trials of snow, wind, fire, hunger, disease, and financial uncertainty. It follows about a century's-worth of people's doin's in a mountain meadow at 8,500 feet in southern Wyoming. This is a quiet, thoughtful read for those of us who have a strong heart connection with the high sagebrush country of the inter-mountain West. ![]() "Often I am permitted to return to a meadow." ![]() ![]() The Case of the Dead Dowager (Michaela McPherson #2), 2016 The Case of Dr Dude (Michaela McPherson #1), 2016Ģ. I’ve not read any of the books in Grant’s Newsflesh Trilogy, but given the back-to-back Hugo nominations (for Feed and Deadline), it’s certainly on my radar. A new Newsflesh novella from the New York Times bestselling author that brought you Feed, Mira Grant.Outside the classroom walls the Rising was spreading, but inside was a carefully protected sanctuary against the growing threat. Everyone I’ve dealt with has been amazing, supportive, and enthusiastic, and now there’s a beautiful chance that maybe, we can see Shaun and Georgia Mason on the big screen. Now, this doesn’t mean this will necessarily be a movie (although I hope there will), but it takes us a huge, huge step closer to that becoming a reality. “Film rights: Mira Grant’s trilogy, Feed, Deadline, and Blackout, optioned to Rachel Olschan, producer at Electric Entertainment, by Pouya Shahbazian of FinePrint, on behlf of Diana Fox at Fox Literary.” From today’s announcement at Publishers Weekly: ![]() ![]() ![]() 9781782264118 The Red-Headed League (Easy Classics) 23.1000 NZD InStock /shop/books /shop/books/childrens-books/fiction /shop/books/childrens-books/fiction/classics /shop/books/childrens-books An illustrated adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic Sherlock Holmes mystery - at an easy-to-read level for readers of all ages!
